Monetize your site. Of course Google will have no idea what your site is about unless you tell it what it is about. How do you that? Easy, you include all sorts of keywords on your site that are relevant to your topic. Obviously this should not be a problem just as long as you picked a topic that you know a lot about.
I will use an example. Say my site was about getting backlinks. My main keyword would simply be getting backlinks even though it is very competitive. It does not matter. So I would include that keyword (being my main keyword) in the title, the URL, and sprinkle it all over the content. As far as keyword density goes you want to have it to be between 3% and 5%. Any higher and Google may penalize your site and it will be long gone.

Use longtailed keywords. What are longtailed keywords? They are simply keywords that are relevant to your site. Going back to the example I am using for backlinks I would include keywords like SEO, internet marketing, and forum marketing. They are keywords that don't have my main keyword in them but they are related. The Google spiders know this and will reward your site for it.

Getting backlinks. Of course on page optimization is always the first step to take when you start a new site. But then comes the off page optimization. Backlinks are the determining factor search engines use and will continue to use when ranking any site. It is great to get as many backlinks as you can by doing things like submitting articles to the top directories. It is even better to get higher quality backlinks. These kinds of links are from sites that are relevant to your site and are an authority in the market that you are in.
Now there are a few ways of doing this. You can either search on Google for your main keyword and see what sites are sitting on top. Then visit each one and contact the webmaster to ask him or her if they would like to do a link exchange. If they are not interested then that is cool. But it is very rare because people with high ranking sites are always willing to help out the little guy.

There is another way which is to buy high quality links. This is frowned upon not only by the search engines but also by webmasters. If anybody finds out they can easily report your site to the search engines. Then you get thrown into search engine jail. Just kidding (obviously) but they will drop your site where it may never see the light of day. It is a risk that I actually do not recommend.

There is one other alternative to scoring high rankings with backlinks .It is of course working for it. How? Create a highly valued site by filling it with high quality content that people will love to read. Then wait until other webmasters find it and create backlinks to your site for free. This may take a long time but you can speed up the process by contacting them and telling them about your content rich site.

The point I am really trying to make here is that it does not matter how competitive the search term is. As long as you are willing to put in the work for getting that site ranked very high you will get there. Just make it valuable and get as much exposure as you possibly can so that you succeed massively. Therefore good things will happen like high rankings and a lot more profit for your business.
